Chapter 6: A Whisper Across Ashenford

Chapter 6: A Whisper Across Ashenford

The streets of Ashenford City gradually returned to their usual rhythm.

Traffic lights blinked between red and green.

Cars moved steadily through the busy roads.

Motorcycles weaved through traffic.

Office workers hurried toward towering glass buildings with briefcases in hand.

Students laughed as they crossed the streets on their way to school.

Street vendors called out to customers while shop owners opened their stores for the day.

To everyone else…

It was simply another ordinary morning.

But beneath the city’s routine…

One unbelievable story was quietly making its way through Ashenford.

“Have you heard what happened outside Central Square?”

“I heard an old man collapsed.”

“No… that’s not the unbelievable part.”

“They said every doctor gave up.”

“And then some young man walked over and brought him back.”

The customers inside a nearby restaurant exchanged doubtful looks.

“You’re joking.”

“I’m serious.”

“My brother was there.”

“He saw everything.”

A few blocks away…

Two taxi drivers waited beside the roadside.

One leaned against his car while sipping coffee.

“You believe those rumors?”

The other shrugged.

“I don’t know.”

“But my cousin works at Eastbridge Central Hospital.”

“He said several doctors came back looking like they’d seen a ghost.”

The first driver laughed.

“Maybe they just lost a patient.”

“No.”

“They said the old man actually woke up.”

The laughter slowly faded.

Inside a café…

Several university students watched a blurry video circulating online.

The recording was shaky.

Someone had filmed the incident from within the crowd.

The quality wasn’t good enough to clearly see Charles’s face.

Only a young man kneeling beside an unconscious elderly man…

Then cheers erupting as the old man suddenly opened his eyes.

One student replayed the clip.

“Could this be edited?”

Another shook his head.

“I heard it happened this morning.”

“The comments are going crazy.”

Some believed it.

Others dismissed it as a trick.

Still…

The story continued spreading.

Little by little…

More and more people throughout Ashenford began talking about the mysterious young man who had accomplished what modern medicine could not.

No one knew his identity.

Not yet.

Meanwhile…

A convoy of black luxury SUVs moved quietly through the city’s wide streets.

Inside the lead vehicle…

Silence filled the spacious cabin.

Charles sat beside the window.

His eyes never stopped moving.

Towering skyscrapers reflected the afternoon sunlight.

Elegant shopping malls lined the streets.

Restaurants buzzed with families enjoying lunch.

Children played in beautifully maintained parks.

Everything felt alive.

Everything felt new.

Compared to Ashbrook Village…

This place seemed like another world entirely.

Across from him, Samantha Ashcroft noticed his quiet fascination.

A gentle smile appeared on her face.

“Is this your first time visiting a city?”

Charles nodded.

“…Yes.”

“I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

Samantha glanced out the window.

“When I was little, Grandfather brought me here for the first time.”

“I reacted the same way.”

Charles looked at her.

“You did?”

She laughed softly.

“I couldn’t stop staring at the tall buildings.”

For the first time that day…

A faint smile appeared on Charles’s face.

It disappeared almost as quickly as it came.

Samuel Ashcroft quietly observed the exchange before speaking.

“Charles.”

Charles immediately turned toward him.

“Yes, Mr. Ashcroft?”

Samuel smiled warmly.

“You saved my life.”

“I don’t like owing people.”

“So tell me…”

“What would you like in return?”

Charles fell silent.

He thought for a long moment before slowly shaking his head.

“I wasn’t expecting anything.”

Samuel raised an eyebrow.

“Nothing?”

Charles nodded.

“I only did what I could.”

“If someone can be saved…”

“I don’t think it’s right to stand by and watch them die.”

The words were simple.

Yet they carried a sincerity that couldn’t be faked.

Samantha looked at Charles in surprise.

She had grown up around businessmen, politicians, and influential people.

Almost everyone wanted something.

Money.

Power.

Connections.

But Charles…

Asked for nothing.

Samuel looked at him quietly.

Then…

A warm smile slowly appeared on his face.

“In today’s world…”

“People like you are becoming harder to find.”

Charles simply looked back out the window.

He wasn’t trying to impress anyone.

He had merely spoken the truth.

The conversation ended.

The convoy continued driving through Ashenford.

After nearly twenty minutes…

The vehicles gradually slowed.

Massive black iron gates stood before them.

At their center was an elegant silver crest.

The gates slowly opened.

Beyond them stretched an enormous estate.

Beautiful gardens surrounded a magnificent mansion built from white stone.

Crystal-clear fountains sparkled beneath the afternoon sun.

Rows of ancient trees lined the long driveway.

Security personnel stood watch at every entrance.

Charles stared quietly through the window.

Even from a distance…

The estate was larger than Ashbrook Village itself.

Samantha noticed his expression and smiled.

“Welcome…”

“To the Ashcroft Estate.”

The convoy slowly drove through the gates.

As they closed behind them…

Charles had no idea…

That this single decision to accept the Ashcroft family’s invitation would become the first turning point in his new life.
