Chapter 23: Testing, Testing

The hum of the base's living room felt louder than usual after the meeting in the High Command. Whiteboards that usually held tactical blueprints and area maps or left empty were now completely covered in mismatched, crossed-out handwriting.

"How about The Cyber Phantoms?" Kaleb suggested, tapping his pen against his chin as he stared at the board. "Or Null Protocol? It sounds clean, tactical, and slightly menacing."

Mia, wrapped tightly in her wool blanket with a half-eaten slice of pizza in hand, groaned loudly. "Kaleb, those sound like computer viruses from 2012. We are a team of heroes, not a rogue hacking boyband."

"Okay, Miss Critic, what do you have?" Kaleb shot back.

"Something classic. Professional," Mia said, standing up to write on the board. "The Vanguard Triad. Or Aegis Dawn."

Neiry, sitting cross-legged on a metal crate while inspecting his suit's micro-connectors, didn't even look up. "Aegis Dawn sounds exactly like the corporate entities we just spent an hour refusing to join. If we brand ourselves like a public relations firm, we lose our anonymity before we even take a single case."

"Fine," Mia sighed, dropping her marker back into the tray. "Neiry, you're the one who used to command armies in your sleep. Give us something."

Neiry paused, his eyes drifting over the names written on the board. He thought about his past—the massive, devastating legions he had led across the burning front lines of Purgatory. Those names had carried heavy titles "the ten commandments" authority and predetermined doom. But this wasn't an army meant to conquer. It was just three teenagers—overlooked, hidden away, or running from destiny—choosing to protect their home on their own terms.

He opened his mouth to suggest something symbolic of a fresh start, but the words caught in his throat. Every concept that came to mind felt either too ominous, too weighted by his past, or just completely out of touch with earthly reality.

"I... actually don't know," Neiry admitted quietly, rubbing the back of his neck. "Everything I think of sounds like a declaration of war."

Kaleb stared at him, dumbfounded. "Wait, seriously? The ancient prince is completely blocked? We are genuinely stumped."

For the next two hours, the cycle repeated. Every single name was shot down. One was too edgy, one was too corporate, one sounded like a sports team, and another felt like an ominous cult. By midnight, the whiteboard was an absolute mess of scribbles, and the room was filled with the collective exhaustion of three people who could defeat a multi-million-dollar power threat but couldn't name a three-person team.

"That's it. I'm done," Mia declared, tossing her head back against the chair. "My brain is fried. Let's just leave it blank."

"We can't leave it blank," Kaleb argued, hovering his hand over the Iron Veil registration portal. "The mandatory system update won't let me submit our encrypted network profile without an official team designation."

"Just type a placeholder," Neiry suggested, his voice deadpan. "We'll change it when we actually figure it out."

Kaleb grumbled, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. He left the designation box completely empty and hit the heavy execution key. The hyper-advanced security software of Iron Veil paused, ran an automated compliance bypass, and defaulted their squad file based on their structural layout.

The screen flashed, officially logging their new profile:

REGISTRATION SUCCESSFUL > ID: #004-NY

DESIGNATION: [THE TEAM]

Kaleb stared at the monitor, a slow smirk spreading across his face. "Well... look at that. We are officially 'The Team.' Genuinely unnamed. Honestly? It kind of works. It fits the whole low-profile, mysterious vibe anyway for now."

"It's better than Cyber Phantoms," Mia muttered, closing her eyes. "Now let everyone sleep. We have to be uptown in six hours."

The next morning, the new reality of their arrangement with Iron Veil became perfectly clear.

This time they weren't escorted to the upper glass tiers where celebrity heroes conducted press conferences and signed promotional merchandise. Instead, the heavy armored transport brought them directly to the restricted Lower Levels of the Regional Headquarters—an underground fortress carved deep into the bedrock beneath the river.

The elevators opened to reveal a massive, brutalist complex constructed from reinforced concrete, thick titanium blast doors, and high-frequency energy dampeners that hummed with a low, constant vibration. Active-duty operatives in tactical gear moved with quiet, military discipline through the corridors.

A massive, battle-hardened hero adjusting heavy armor plates turned his head as they passed. His gaze was stern and calculating, measuring the three teens against the rumors of the Aegis Corp heist.

Citadel stepped down from a diagnostic scale, the reinforced steel platform beneath his boots groaning under a sudden, artificial surge of his weight. He rolled his shoulders, a dense, low vibration humming off his obsidian plates as he looked over at the newcomers.

Citadel stepped down from a diagnostic scale, the reinforced steel platform beneath his boots groaning under a sudden, artificial surge of his weight. He rolled his shoulders, a dense, low vibration humming off his plates as he looked over at the newcomers.

"So, these are the street rats who think they can slide straight into Tier 4 brackets," Citadel rumbled, his voice carrying the deep resonance of shifting tectonic plates. He locked eyes with Neiry, adjusting a massive gauntlet. "Don't let a lucky break against Apex make you soft. The street doesn't have parameters. The arrays do. If you don't know how to handle real mass, this place will flatten you."

"We handle our weight just fine," Neiry replied smoothly, his tone deadpan beneath his mask.

Citadel gave a short, gruff nod—not out of respect, but as a silent dare—before turning back to the door.

A few yards further, the air itself seemed to ripple near a locker terminal. A lean, cloaked figure literally stepped out of a solid concrete wall as if the stone were nothing more than mist.

[ HERO CARD: PHANTASM ]
● Real Name: Unknown
● Agency Affiliation: Iron Veil / Covert Operations
● Power Rank: A-Rank
● Status Rank: Senior Operative
● Power Class: Phase-Shifting
● Ability Profile: Masters the ability to temporarily loosen his atomic structure, allowing him to pass through solid matter, evade physical trauma, and render himself entirely silent. Exceptional stealth capabilities paired with localized sensory disruption.

Phantasm offered them a silent, lingering nod before vanishing down an adjacent corridor. Mia kept her eyes forward, her heart racing slightly at the sheer concentration of high-tier power in a single hallway.

At the end of the main corridor, leaning casually against a primary diagnostic console, was a familiar face.

[ HERO CARD: VOLT ]
● Real Name: Unknown
● Agency Affiliation: Iron Veil / External Cell Liaison
● Power Rank: B-Rank (Potential A-Rank)
● Status Rank: Field Officer
● Power Class: Electrokinesis (High-Tier)
● Ability Profile: Can generate, absorb, and manipulate raw electrical currents. Capable of short-range, lightning-fast dashes and firing concentrated plasma bolts. Highly agile and possesses exceptional close-quarters martial arts training.

"Well, look what the tide washed in," Volt said, a sharp, amused smirk playing on his face as he watched them approach. Small, blue static sparks danced across his knuckles as he tapped the diagnostic screen. "I saw the registration file push through the system this morning. Couldn't decide on a name, huh? Just 'The Team'? Classic. Very mysterious. Very low-profile. Very stupid."

"You know me, I prefer to let my work do the talking," Neiry replied smoothly, his mask glanced low. "You owe us some information on Vance's network, Volt."

"Well information is earned by clearance tiers here, kid," Volt countered, straightening up from the console. His reflective visor gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights. "You took down Apex, which opened a lot of eyes. I'll give you that. But the Iron Veil evaluation arrays don't care about street reputation. They test assets to their literal breaking points although that may not be as hard for you."

Volt's smirk vanished, his eyes shifting directly onto Kaleb's unranked, charcoal-black suit. "And they don't hold back or adjust parameters for normal humans. Citadel wasn't entirely wrong, you know. The simulations inside those doors are calibrated to push Tier 4 limits. If your tech or your focus slips for even a millisecond in there, the system will break you. Are you sure you're ready for this, 'Tempest'?"

Kaleb adjusted his wrist terminals, a sharp spark of defiance hitting his eyes as his jaw tightened. "Just boot up the simulation, lightning rod. Let's see what your grid has got."

Volt chuckled, hitting a heavy override sequence on his terminal. "Your funeral, kid. Let's see if you can actually run with the big dogs."

The heavy pneumatic security doors slid open, separating the three into independent, hyper-advanced testing chambers. The walls were lined with seamless, poly-synthetic tiles made with millions of micro-sensors designed to record data output, cognitive response time, and physical impact.

[ HERO CARD: BEACON ]

● Agency Affiliation: Iron Veil Sub-Contract
● Power Rank: Outdated / Pending Evaluation
● Status Rank: Active Vigilante
● Power Class: Solar Manipulation
● Ability Profile: Absorbs and converts solar energy into raw solar photons. Capable of generating high-intensity light shields, focused heat cutting arcs, and blinding flashes. Undergoing full structural output calibration.

Mia stood in the center of the room, taking a slow, steady breath. Her muscles still throbbed with a deep soreness from fighting through Apex's localized gravity fields from before, but as the simulation initialized, she pushed the discomfort entirely out of her mind.

The room transformed. The white tiles dissolved into a hyper-realistic simulation of a high-threat urban ambush. Dozens of armed, fast-moving kinetic constructs materialized on the ledges above, unleashing a synchronized volley of suppression fire.

Mia moved instantly. She didn't rely on the simple, defensive light shields she used on the streets of Brooklyn. For the first time on an official, recorded grid, she drew directly from her core somatic reserves.

With absolute precision, she vanished into a blinding flash of displacement light, reappearing directly behind the first wave of strikes. Her hands flared with brilliant, focused solar energy. She didn't just blast blindly; she channeled the light into precise, high-frequency cutting arcs, neutralizing three targets in a single fluid motion. The system's tracking algorithms began to spike aggressively, flashing warning indicators across the observation deck as her speed and power output completely shattered her old street metrics.

Meanwhile, in Chamber 5, Kaleb was facing an entirely different nightmare.

● Power Class: Non-Powered
● Ability Profile: Base human
The simulation didn't give Kaleb targets to fight; it gave him an environmental crisis. The chamber floor split open into a chaotic matrix of collapsing infrastructure, toxic gas vents, and automated security turrets tracking his every movement.

Without superpowers, Kaleb had to rely entirely on his fast cognitive processing and the lightweight kinetic-matrix suit Neiry had modified for him. As a turret locked onto his chest, Kaleb executed a hard slide beneath a falling concrete beam, the suit's underlying fibers absorbing the brunt of the kinetic impact.

"Come on, think," Kaleb muttered, his fingers flying across his integrated wrist terminal. He didn't try to outrun the system; he chose to rewrite it.

Tapping into the simulation's localized telemetry loop, Kaleb initiated a high-frequency override exploit. With a single heavy keystroke, he hijacked the targeting parameters of the automated turrets, forcing them to fire on the environmental gas vents instead. The resulting chain reaction neutralized the entire hazard grid in seconds.

He fell back against a simulated wall, bruised, scraped, and completely out of breath—but his final tactical score on the console monitor shattered the baseline record for an unranked asset.

In the primary heavy-containment combat chamber, the automated parameters reached their absolute peak.

[ HERO CARD: DARK ]
● Real Name: Unknown
● Agency Affiliation: Iron Veil
● Power Rank: Outdated / Pending Evaluation
● Status Rank: Rookie: Outdated / Pending Evaluation
● Power Class: Darkness

● Ability Profile: Demonstrates unparalleled superhuman physical attributes, darkness manipulation, possible shadow control and specialized energy manipulation. Combines elite-tier martial prowess with untraceable sensory dampening.

The AI did not hold back. Utilizing the structural damage data recorded from the vault, the simulation generated a flawless, hyper-dense replica of Apex's gravity anomaly fields. Heavy kinetic wedges tore through the air, completely distorting the atmosphere around Dark.

Neiry stood completely grounded, his dark eyes watching the incoming waves of crushing gravity traps. He knew exactly what was at stake. The biometric sensors in the walls were recording every micro-breath, every muscular twitch, and every energy signature. If he accessed his true demonic mana, if triggered his cover would be permanently blown to High Command.

He forced himself to rely strictly on his martial arts training and his base power, restricting any unnecessary energy.

A gravity wave toward his flank. Neiry pivoted seamlessly, using the enemy's own momentum to vault himself over a secondary distortion field. He struck an automated construct with a lightning-fast, precise strike, shattering its hard-light core using nothing more than perfect physical leverage.

But the AI adjusted too fast. Recognizing that the target was evading the parameters, the system initiated a safety override, multiplying the gravity metrics by a factor of ten. The air inside the chamber turned to liquid lead. The concrete beneath Neiry's boots began to crack under the artificial atmosphere, threatening to physically crush him into the floor.

He was backed into a corner. He couldn't dodge, and he couldn't break the field with his restricted human strength without being severely injured.

Neiry's eyes darkened behind his mask. With an intense, disciplined focus, he suppressed a massive inward surge of his mana pool, keeping the energy completely contained within his core, but allowed a tiny fraction of the residual pressure to escape outward.

It wasn't an attack. It was a microscopic, invisible shadow pulse.

The pulse carried a subtle visible element of purple energy around his hand, completely bypassing the physical cameras in the room. the raw, existential weight of the demonic frequency went directly through the hyper-sensitive biometric scanners. The micro-sensors in the walls instantly overloaded, unable to quantify the anomalous reading.

BZZZZT.

The simulated city skyline flickered violently. A sharp pop echoed from the primary terminal node, and the entire simulation abruptly short-circuited, cutting completely to black. The heavy emergency overhead lights turned on, bathing the silent, smoking chamber in a cold white glow.

Up in the observation room, Commander Lance and Volt stared at the main diagnostic monitors in absolute silence.

Mia's and Kaleb's profiles were already printing out, their digital data streams updating to high-tier official rankings that placed their squad in an elite bracket. But Neiry's monitor was an absolute disaster of corrupted variables.

The heavy titanium doors of Chamber 1 hissed open, and Neiry stepped out into the corridor, casually adjusting the cuffs of his dark suit as if nothing had happened. He walked up to the terminal where his new physical hero card was slowly sliding out of the automated tray.

Neiry picked it up. The plastic card hummed with an integrated security chip, but where his official power classification and threat tier should have been cleanly logged, the system text was heavily glitched, showing an unclassifiable, anomalous rating.

They might have entered the monolith completely unnamed, and their metrics might be entirely glitched, but as Mia and Kaleb walked out of their respective chambers to join him, the truth was undeniable.

Iron Veil's database now officially recognized "The Team" as one of the most dangerous, unclassifiable asset cells on the global grid—and were officially ready to hunt.
